From Rough-Cut to Refined: Reclaimed Wood Hooks for Welcoming Guests

When Becky realized her guest bedroom needed a better place for coats, robes, and bags, she saw an opportunity to make something both useful and beautifully in tune with her home. The walls and ceiling in the room are finished with rough-cut white and red oak harvested right from the property, and the goal was for the new wall hooks to blend in seamlessly, not stand out as an afterthought.

Becky turned to reclaimed wood saved from past projects, but there was one problem: it was rough, prickly, and far from guest-ready. Enter the Cville Tool Library. With a borrowed Ryobi electric hand planer, and a little help from instructional videos and first-time tips, the transformation began. The planer turned out to be a total champ, renewing the wood and smoothing it far beyond expectations. A bit of light sanding, some simple black hooks, and careful mounting later, the project was complete.

The result was both practical and personal, and a hit with Thanksgiving guests. Access to the right tool saved an estimated $100 in rental fees and, more importantly, opened the door to new skills and future projects using reclaimed wood.

For Becky, the tool library isn’t just about tools;it’s about confidence, creativity, and community. Being able to maintain and improve their home independently, while making it truly their own, is exactly the kind of outcome we love to see.
