From Crib to Craft: A First Build with Shared Tools

There’s something especially meaningful about a first woodworking project, and this one came with a pretty wonderful bonus: family memories built right alongside the furniture.

One of our members set out to build a simple floor bed to help their preschooler transition out of a crib. With help from the Cville Tool Library’s miter saw, saw stand, clamps, pocket hole jig, and sander, they took on their very first woodworking project and ended up with a finished bed they’re proud of, along with new confidence in what they can build next.

From a practical standpoint, the project was a big win. Access to shared tools saved an estimated $500 in tool costs alone, and when compared to a similar store-bought bed priced around $1,200, the savings were close to $1,000 (materials aside). But the real value went far beyond the numbers.

This build turned into a joyful family activity. Their son helped choose colors, pitched in with priming, and even did a bit of hand sanding. The result? A bed he absolutely loves and proudly shows off to every guest who walks through the door.

Now officially bitten by the woodworking bug, this member is already eyeing their next project: outdoor furniture. We can’t wait to see it!
