Some projects are extra special because they’re made for someone you love. Jon, one of our members, recently created a vibrant, ammonite-shaped wooden puzzle for their baby nephew. It’s a 24-piece keepsake that’s as delightful as it is unique.
But as any woodworker knows, 90% of every project is sanding, and this one was no exception. After cutting the puzzle on a laser cutter, each piece needed careful smoothing, especially to remove the dark char left behind. That’s when the Cville Tool Library stepped in to help.
The hero of the project?
- Dremel sanding tool
With the Dremel in hand, sanding became faster, cleaner, and far more precise. Its small size and specialized attachments made it perfect for getting into the tight corners of the puzzle pieces—spots that would normally require oddly shaped files or lots of patient hand-sanding.
Borrowing the tool saved about $60, but as Jon pointed out, the value went far beyond money:
“I think it’s important to share the assets of a community, rather than requiring individuals to invest in tools that are used for a few projects and sit idle most of the time.”
A thoughtful gift, a smoother finish, and another example of how sharing tools helps creativity thrive.
Have a handcrafted project you’re proud of? We’d love to feature it!
